Abstract

As traditional settlements Kauman Yogyakarta had been born along with the founding of the city and the Yogyakarta kingdom in 1755. This settlement rich with spaces and buildings of the past such as City’s Great Mosque, Ndalem Pengulon, Ketibs’ and batik merchants’ houses, and many more. Here, space derived from the past was not only have a single meaning, for the inhabitants of Kauman Yogyakarta spaces from the past are rich with meanings. The main ingredient in this paper is part of a research for dissertation. By using phenomenological method the research was able to reveal some diverse and distinctive meaning of spaces. This is consistent with the aims of Husserlian model in phenomenologyical method, which basically want to reveal and understand the essential meanings of objects (spaces) according to the point of view of the informants or in this case the inhabitants of the settlement. Kauman Yogyakarta usually viewed as a traditional settlement with a strong cultural dan religious background, and until now it is still survive in Yogyakarta downtown. The problem in the main research is: What is the current meaning of Kauman residential space for its inhabitants? This article would only describe the two kinds of meanings that had been successfully reducted from the citizens empirical feeling when experiencing “the spaces from the past”. Those two meaning are The space needs to be preserved and The (space of) past that still survive.
