Abstract
This study aims to determine whether musical creativity can support working memory performance in hearing impaired children. Hearing impaired children often struggle to recall knowledge, comprehend it, and apply it in daily life due to their poor working memory function. Creativity is expected to become an activity that may help hearing impaired children enhance their working memory. A musical activity with a creative component was chosen as an activity to enhance working memory performance. The ideas and concepts utilized to answer the problem of this study include the theory of Lee and Therriault (2013), which states that the process of creative thought is closely related to the working memory components. Musical activities using the Orff and Kodaly learning methodologies assisted to build creativity and provide creative musical outcomes in the form of movement improvisation and rhythm composition. This study uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. The participant of this study are consisted of 16 subjects who were selected using a targeted sampling method and then separated into the experimental and control groups. The paired sample t-test is used as the data analysis technique analysis. This research showed that the significance value of the Paired Sample T- test is 0.003 (Sig. 2 tailed = 0.003<0.05) as well as the N-gain effectiveness test is 60.2083 or 60%. This study's results suggest that: (1) musical creativity can support the working memory performance of hearing impaired children; (2) the musical activity using the Orff learning method is a fairly effective treatment for improving the working memory performance of hearing impaired children; (3) the musical rhythms perceptions of hearing impaired children can be achieved through figural abilities and visual memory; and (4) the characteristics of experimental tasks affect the results of the study, so that the musical activity given in further research can be expanded and deepened to improve working memory performance as well as bring up and hone other abilities of hearing impaired children.
