Abstract

rhis paper aims to revea I batasar::;:;:;:rceremony rrom conceptuar, behavioul and sound sides. The problem revealed is why bataganjurwith its hard Oeaiing character as used in ngaben ceremony with grief tone atmosphere. The approach used is ethnomusicology, while the analysis was based on concept of three steps musical anatysis by Alan p Merriam model. Balaganiur is a series of gamelan instrument categorized in barungan mbdyawhich consist of percussive instruments in petog tone. ln ngaben ceremony, barungan is used to assist memargi procession to sefra. Conceptually, bataganjur has tight aslociation to panca mahabhufa element and viewed as symbot of ista dewafa. lts presence in ngaben ceremony is believed to fasten returning process of p anca mahabhuta atit(micro cosmos) to the origin, panca mahabhuta agung (macro cosmos). Continuity of balaganjuris supported by seka gong behaviour to keep bataganiur going on, supported by thl Hindus as based by the faith of Siwa Sidhanta. From the sound side, bataganjurconiains musical aspect in appropriate to memargi ke setra procession. Therefore, it is very commo n if bataganjur is still used in ngaben ceremony so far.
