Abstract

Karya Finalist UOB Painting of The Year 2024 AC ANDRE TANAMA Pearl • 2024 Acrylic on canvas 150 x 150 cm #andretanamaartwork I was inspired by Johannes Vermeer’s iconic painting—"Girl with a Pearl Earring" (c.1665). The identity of the woman in Vermeer’s masterpiece remains a mystery to this day, despite numerous theories and analyses. In my painting "Pearl" (2024), I reinterpreted Vermeer’s work by replacing the woman with Gwen Silent, an original character (my alter-ego) I created in 2007. Gwen Silent—a silent girl with thousand words—is a little girl without a mouth, symbolizing silence. For me, the identity of the figure, whoever or whatever it may be, is best left a mystery. In "Pearl" (2024), the focus is on the 'pearl' itself. The pearl represents the hidden potential that becomes a valuable treasure for the figure in the painting. This potential is not only seen as talent, but also creativity and other exceptional qualities. Most importantly, it reflects the capacity for gratitude. For truly, gratitude is the highest form of art.
