Abstract

This study examines the Srandul Purba Budaya performance of the lakon Kethek Ogleng in Bumen Tourism Village, Kotagede, employing Richard Schechner's Performance Studies approach and George R. Kernodle's structure-texture theory. Srandul is a folk theater (folk opera) specific to Yogyakarta that combines drama, dance, music, and tembang (sung poetry). This art form is threatened with extinction due to modernization; however, it has been revitalized through the Archipelago Arts Innovation Program (PISN), a collaboration between the Bumen community and the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta. This descriptive-analytical qualitative research employs participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. The findings reveal three main points. First, the creative process of the performance follows Schechner's three stages: (1) proto-performance, which includes training, workshops, and rehearsals; (2) performance, which takes place at the Bumen Public Green Open Space (RTHP) pendopo as a liminal space, encompassing warm-up, public performance, and cooldown; and (3) aftermath, which consists of documentary archives, audience critical responses, and the transformation of young performers from mere transportation to transformation. Second, the performative elements consist of movement, sound-music, verbal language, and performance space. Third, the structure of the five scenes and the texture of the performance work synergistically to create the audience's emotional experience. This study concludes that Srandul Purba Budaya in Bumen is not a dead tradition preserved museum-style, but rather a dynamic living tradition, in which restored behavior is not passively replicated but negotiated across generations as a form of communal responsibility and cultural identity, while also serving as a social glue through the spirit of saeyeg saeka praya (mutual cooperation). Keywords: Srandul, Kethek Ogleng, Performance Studies, Restored Behavior, Structure and Texture, Cultural Revitalization, Folk Theater, Bumen Tourism Village, Richard Schechner, George R. Kernodle.
