Abstract
The play Mega-Mega is one of Arifin C. Noer’s works that combines social realism and lyrical expressionism within the framework of a modern theatrical play. This play highlights the realities of life for marginalized communities in Yogyakarta during the 1960s. This study aims to examine the hidden social aspects within the textual structure of the play Mega-Mega through a sociological approach to drama. The research employs a homological approach to map the parallels between the textual structure and the mental structure of society during that period. A descriptive qualitative method is used to analyze the forms of social conflict, life pressures, and survival strategies of the marginalized community depicted in the play. The results of the analysis indicate that Mega-Mega not only presents a narrative of the suffering of a marginalized group living beneath the city square monument but also represents the socio-political dynamics of Indonesia in the period leading up to the New Order. The world of dreams or collective fantasy serves as a central element that is not merely a psychological escape for the characters but also functions as a symbol of existential struggle and the defense of self-respect for the lower social class. Through this sociological approach to drama, the play also presents elements of cultural mentality such as magical optimism and the cultural solidarity embodied by the mother figure which can serve as educational material for the general public regarding Indonesian history and cultural criticism that remains relevant across the ages.
