Abstract

Jathilan is a traditional performing art that has developed in the Special Region of Yogyakarta and possesses significant cultural value. However, the advancement of modern culture has led to a decline in younger generations' interest, particularly among children, in traditional arts. Based on this phenomenon, this creative work aims to develop batik motifs inspired by the hobbyhorse (kuda kepang) property used in Jathilan performances as a medium for introducing cultural heritage through children's casual clothing. The creation method employed in this work is practice-based research, consisting of the stages of preparation, imagination, imagination development, and execution. The approaches applied include aesthetic and ergonomic approaches. The creative process began with data collection through literature studies and field observations, followed by motif design development, garment design, hand-drawn batik production, coloring using the colet technique with Remasol dyes, and sewing processes to produce ready-to-wear garments. The outcome of this creative work consists of six children's casual wear designs featuring hobbyhorse motifs combined with various supporting elements of Jathilan performances, such as whips, musical instruments, and performance ornaments. The motifs were developed through a stylization process, resulting in simple, cheerful forms suitable for children's characteristics. This work is expected to serve as a medium for cultural preservation as well as an educational tool for introducing children to Jathilan art through fashion, which is closely connected to their daily lives.
