Abstract
Peacock Dance was created by R. TjetjeSomantri, a Sundanese dance maestro. It is a female dance in the form of rampak dance, which is very popular among the Sundanese. Adapting peacocks' behavior, it was often performed at the presidential palace during Sukarno's administration in the 1960s. Similarly, in West Java, especially in the city of Bandung, it has become one of the dances that is often performed to welcome state guests. lrawati Durban, a student of Tjetje Somantri, later gave new touches, either in the aspect of dance movement, accompaniment or costume design. Peacock Dance of lrawati 'style' then spread to many communities. In 1993, the lrawati Durban version of Peacock Dance was part of the courses of Sundanese Dance in the Department of Dance at the Indonesian Art Institute of Yogyakarta. The aesthetic touch given by lrawati Durban apparently caused Peacock Dance to be preferred by many students who are not Sundanese. It seems that the clear structure of the choreography with movement motifs that are easy to learn, very beautiful fashion in harmonious color arrangement, as well as lively dance accompaniment, are aspects which sparked the students' interest. As a result, Peacock Dance has become a dance that is often performed by students at various events. Key Words: Peacock dance, lrawati Durban, choreography.
