Abstract
This study deals with the existence of a gift throwing called sawer during a mask dance performance. In this case, the gift may be in the form of either money or food and is thrown by spectators to the performers on the stage. It has become customary thatfeasts and parties carried out by people of Indramayu villages in particular and the communities of West Java in general are enlivened by various kinds of performances. One among these kinds is the most highly preferred mask dance, in which the sawer gift throwing custom is such a unique way and having a lot of variations that presence becomes prominent and marks the performance with a specific feature. Distinguished by meanings and motivations sawer varies. People know sawer balangan, sawer geredanl ja/a 'an, sawer pancingan, sawer jambu alas and narayuda. Each type of which has its specific tradition in the way the spectators express their sympathy to the dalang topeng and address their fellow spectators. Besides serving villagers as a means of associating with one another, sawer gives the dalang and all the artist group members a financial benefit for the dalang topeng the greater the amount of gift, the likelier it is for him to deserve appreciation as an artist.
