Abstract

The form and aesthetic principle of Legong Keraton (read: Lègong Kêraton) has inspired the emergence of various dance creations, whether it can be categorized as the art of palegongan(read: palègongan) or far from the source. Palegongan which is understood as a dance concept summarizes the various norms and beauty principles, one of them is the harmonious relationship between amovement and the dance music. The dance structure that is parallel to the dance music in Legong Keraton generally consists of five main parts namely pangawit, pangawak, pangècét, lampahan, and ended in pakaad part. Among the eighteenth forms of Legong, there are two dances that is Legong Bapang and Legong Durga which only have three main parts: pengawit, pengawak, and pakaad.These two forms of Legong constitute the development form of Legong based on the complete Legong gending namely Bapang gending (bapang gêdhé and bapang cênik).The development form of Legong offers an idea to exploring certain parts of gending patterns as a foundation to create a new dance. As an inspiration for dance creation, the pattern of music becomes the focus of this paper. This inspirational idea must be preceded by understanding the scope of aesthetic palegongan like the alignment pattern of dance and music, the movement and melody as well as the relationship patterns between music and dance structure. Each part has a possibility to be developed. A brief discussion on the dance and music relationship in Legong Keraton’s dance structure increases the choreographer insight into traditional Legong creation. Similarly, the composer of dance music does not only create a music to comply the dance necessary but able to offer a music pattern that could be danced.
