Abstract

Performance studies has been aplicated to do the research on Suran ritual as performance. Through performance studies, Suran ritual is analyzed from the standpoint of “is” and “as” performance and it focuses on the performativity aspects of Suran ritual without neglecting the expressivity aspects of it. Suran ritual is an arena of power struggles, in which the competition among various elements has occurred in it as a practice. Elements that act as the agency in Suran ritual have different modalities to survive in a field. Suran ritual at the same time is a liminal process where the anti-structure society has occurred and created the concept of communitas. The peak of performativity lies in the climax of the performance where. To achieve a climax, the various levels of expertise used by the performers, which in this case the level of expertise is, manifested in visual and auditive forms of the elements of ritual. Suran ritual is a multi-layered entities; so a semiotic approach is required to analyze the meaning of each layer. Semiotic approach is appropriate to explain the meaning of the physical elements of performance and the performance as a form of activities as well.
