Abstract
Keroncong is well-established as a musical genre in Indonesia's cultural repertoire. In Tugu village north of Jakarta, Krontjong Toegoe developed in the 17th century as a hybrid genre that directly absorbed Portuguese influence. This paper discusses the musical style of Krontjong Toegoe, the historical relationship to 16th century Portuguese music, and the disseminating role of the Tugu community. Because Krontjong Toegoe is extant, it is significant as an example of the continuing evolution of creative forms that combine elements from both East and West.
