Abstract
Lotus scroll ornaments are often found on the walls of Hindu temples and Buddhas in Java. Lotus scrolls are one of the oldest motifs belonging to Hinduism named Padmamūla. Padmamūla is depicted in the form of lotus tendrils that grow from natural roots or humps. The lotus root or hump is the most common, not only in India, in Java, and elsewhere it can be described as a gem. Gems are nothing but the seeds of the main part of the lotus plant, the (Skr. Padmamūla). The tendrils of scroll Padmamūla are the embodiment of the concept of Hindu cosmogony based on the book of Purana, namely the process of creation and expansion of the universe in the form of lotus scrolls from the seeds of golden eggs. While based on the scriptures of the Guardians, there are teachings in the form of speech figures “Tunjung tanpa telaga.” This paper discussions the concept of creating scroll trendil ornaments, Padmamūla, based on the approach of art history and adaptation theory by Linda Hutcheon in her book: A Theory of Adaptation. The discussion emphasized on aesthetic aspects based on artifacts found in the temples of Lara Jonggrang Prambanan, Yogyakarta; Surowono temple in Kediri, East Java; and the tomb of Sunan Drajad Guardian in Lamongan, East Java. Padmamūla ornaments is a form of adaptation of the Hindu Purana book. “Tunjung tanpa telaga” ornaments during the early Islamic period also followed the procedure of the theory. The ornamental variety of classical Javanese motifs in later developments is believed to be an advanced evolution of the ornament trendils of the scrolls Padmamūla. Its philosophical meaning may not be well known, for this reason it is necessary to do representation and reinterpretation as an effort to revitalize the traditional ornaments. This is a past craft of ancestral work that needs to be studied to find the method of the creative process.
