Abstract
Banji motif is one of the oldest batik patterns, rich in symbolism and philosophy. Derived from the basic shape of the swastika, it symbolizes harmony, balance, prosperity, safety, and spiritual protection, and is a significant element in classical Javanese decorative art. In this work, metal waste from industrial byproducts is utilized as an alternative resource and transformed into high-value fashion design elements. The application of the Banji motif to ready-to-wear Muslim fashion is an effort to preserve local cultural values through a modern and relevant fashion medium. The fusion of local wisdom, sustainability principles, and design innovation makes this creation relevant to the current challenges and opportunities in the fashion industry. It also serves as an effort to preserve cultural identity amid the forces of globalization. The creation process follows SP. Gustami’s Three Stages and Six Steps method, which includes exploration, design, and realization stages. The theoretical foundations applied are aesthetics and ergonomics. The production techniques involve pattern making, batik crafting, dyeing, fabric cutting, sewing, fabric manipulation with pintuck, metal processing techniques such as coping saw, and finishing. The final work consists of a ready-to-wear Muslim fashion collection with six different looks, using standard women’s size M. Each look includes an inner blouse, an outer layer such as a cape, coat, or outerwear, and a bottom piece in the form of a skirt or pants. Every piece has a unique batik design and individual title.
