Abstract

Wet cyanotype is one of many alternative techniques developed from the cyanotype process, an alternative photographic method that began to gain recognition in the 19th century. Initially, wet cyanotype was considered a failure or an imperfection in the process, producing unexpected textures and abstract blotches. Consciously and thoughtfully recreating such visual variations is of great artistic interest, including in our efforts to explore and understand. The visual variations in this thesis will be presented through the use of several additional chemical substances, with their different characteristics observed so that they can be utilized and implemented in the creation of expressive photographic artworks. In the creation of the photographic works for this thesis, the exploration of visual effects in wet cyanotype will be implemented to realize visual imaginations of mythical animals. These are based on childhood memories shaped by local folklore, storybooks, and cultural performances. The wet cyanotype technique, with its freedom of exploration, is considered suitable and compelling for depicting mythical animals through imaginative visuals. This thesis aims to examine how far the wet cyanotype technique can be explored as a form of photographic-based artistic expression. The final results of this creative process will be enhanced with minor interventions using acrylic paint, intended to reinforce and deepen the meaning within the visual aspects of the artwork.
