Abstract

This study examines the hybridity created by Maxima Band in their song Sapala Naung Hu Pillit, which combines Batak musical idioms and mediums with the rhythmic characteristics of Dangdut Koplo to form a style known as “Batak Koplo.” The method used in this study is a qualitative method with an ethnomusicological approach accompanied by three data collection techniques, namely interviews, observation, and documentation. The results of the study show that this fusion occurs through musical elements that retain the Batak feel but are presented with the more dynamic energy of Koplo. The public response to this work has been mixed. Those who accept it appreciate the fusion because it is considered fresher, more enjoyable, and able to attract a wider audience. Meanwhile, skeptical responses or rejection arose not because of Batak tradition, but because the Koplo Dangdut style in the combination of the two idioms felt incongruous. These findings show that Maxima Band's hybridity opens up new possibilities for the development of Batak music in the digital era, while also reflecting the dynamics of public acceptance of musical innovations.
